beloveds…
we were never meant to
hide in closets
and we were never to be spoken of
in whispered corners by a
world filled with others
afraid of their own reflections
we are from the flame of
channing’s truth
olympia brown’s relentlessness
in lou alcott’s defiance of societal
expectations,
and thoreau’s solitude of freedom –
freedom of solitude
we are here,
heirs of a theology that says
LOVE is love
the soul is not gendered
that covenants live in hearts
not courtrooms…
– “Beacons” (excerpt) by Rev. Kimi Floyd Reisch
This month, we begin with more Resilience and we end with Pride! Ours is a faith rich in tradition, yet vibrantly alive today. Just as we are proud of where individuals like Channing, Brown, Alcott, and Throeau have led us, we have great pride in our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer folks who today live out loud that “LOVE is love” and “You do you!”
MVUU is here as a secular faith community because of the example of resilience from the past and the present – and we choose to make it our future!
Nov 2 “One Year On”
Our “Rising Resilience” speakers, Deena and Chris, join us for a conversational reflection on where we are have been and where we are going as a country.
Rev. Matthew, Deena Hayes-Greene, Chris Crass
Nov 9 “Our OWL is Wise”
“Our Whole Lives” – OWL – is our Unitarian Universalist Association and United Church of Christ age appropriate, fact based, sex and sexuality curriculum. Come and find out why it is the absolute, 100%, BEST thing that Unitarian Universalists are doing in the world right now.
Rev. Matthew, Maria Menconi
Nov 16 “Our Values in Action”
Through the lens of our UU values, we welcome three outside organizations to speak about their work in our area.
Melody Luepke & Samar Adi
Nov 23 Pulpitpalooza
Rev. Inge Detweiler from Borderlands UU returns to our pulpit for a Baja 4 pulpit-switch. Rev. Matthew will be at Sky Island UU in Sierra Vista.
Rev. Inge,
Nov 30 “All Our Joys & Sorrows”
As we share in our open mic joy and sorrow ceremony, our Nominating Committee will be leading us to perceive service at MVUU in new ways.
Nominating Committee, Samar Adi
We welcome you to our Sunday Services whether in our sanctuary, on Zoom, or on our YouTube channel. Here you might sing a few hymns, listen to our choir—and maybe even tap your foot to our band. A reflection or sermon is usually delivered by our minister, one of our members, or a guest speaker. Maybe you’ll come on a Sunday that is interactive or when members present readings and choral selections. Another Sunday may include a celebration of a life event or be devoted to a justice issue. You might catch a humorous enactment expressing one of our values. In other words, no two Sundays are the same at MVUU.
What is the same is that You Are Welcome here.
All ages are welcome: Children and youth may attend the entire Sunday service or participate in age-specific programming. We provide children’s activities with background checked volunteers every Sunday for our community members ages 2-10.
Wear what you please: At MVUU you’ll see casual clothes, shorts and jeans, and maybe even skirts and neckties.
Our building is accessible: We can accommodate wheelchairs, canes, and walkers. We have assistive listening devices. Our restrooms are accessible, family-friendly, and gender neutral.
Introduce yourself if comfortable: We invite visitors to introduce themselves so that people in the congregation can welcome you. Participation is always optional!
Stay for Coffee Hour: We want to meet you, so stick around. Coffee Hour is practically a UU ritual where we gather casually and make connections in an informal atmosphere. Stay for a coffee, linger on the garden patio, or play on the swing-set.
