SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS—NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS

Our MVUU School Partnerships social justice team is helping Laguna and Hendricks Elementary schools meet some of their needs. Because our congregation’s home is within the Flowing Wells Unified School District boundaries, we are reaching out to our neighbors. In this spirit, we work closely with the schools’ principals to identify areas where we can assist. The principals—Alan Schmidt at Laguna and Tabetha Finchum at Hendricks—and their staffs welcome our help and look forward to our participation in the classroom.

Both Hendricks and Laguna elementary schools are federally defined Title 1 schools, meaning that these schools have large concentrations of low-income students who are enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. Title 1 schools typically serve migrant students, students with limited English proficiency, homeless students, students with disabilities, neglected students, delinquent students, and at risk students. Ninety percent of Laguna students and 70 percent of Hendricks students fall within one or more of these categories.
